In a change of plan, the public will be able to watch Mark Zuckerberg's response to European Parliament leaders' privacy concerns.

The body's president, Antonio Tajani, has tweeted that tomorrow's 75-minute meeting would be livestreamed.

Earlier, news that the Facebook chief's meeting with the parliament's political group leaders would be in private, had been criticised.

The arrangement had been unfavourably compared to his Washington testimony.

"It is disgraceful how Zuckerberg promises more transparency, but does not want to make public statements in the European Parliament. Facebook operates a public platform and therefore has to publicly take responsibility for its actions," said an online petition launched by the German Green Party's MEP Sven Giegold.

"Like the American citizens, we are entitled to a public hearing of Zuckerberg as well."

More than 30,000 people had signed support for his Change.org campaign.

Google’s YouTube will launch a music streaming service next week, it said on Thursday, looking to use its popular internet video brand to tap the growing market for paid music streaming.

YouTube Music will launch on May 22, and include features such as personalized playlists based on a user’s YouTube history. The service is expected to eventually replace Google Play Music, the Alphabet Inc unit’s existing music streaming brand.

“Google has an advantage given YouTube’s more than a billion users and viewers. So, it has opportunities to convert some into YouTube Music listeners or premium subscribers,” said Ali Mogharabi, analyst at Morningstar Research.

The growing adoption of paid music streaming has helped wean a generation of music listeners away from free or pirated music, and has led to services such as Spotify and Apple Music becoming the recording industry’s single biggest revenue source.

Facebook says it deleted or added warnings to about 29 million posts that broke its rules on hate speech, graphic violence, terrorism and sex, over the first three months of the year.

It is the first time that the firm has published figures detailing the scale of efforts to enforce its rules. Facebook is developing artificial intelligence tools to support the work of its 15,000 human moderators. But the report suggest the software struggles to spot some types of abuse.

For example, the algorithms only flagged 38% of identified hate speech posts over the period, meaning 62% were only addressed because users had reported them. By contrast, the firm said its tools spotted 99.5% of detected propaganda posted in support of Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and other affiliated groups, leaving only 0.5% to the public.

The figures also reveal that Facebook believes users were more likely to have experienced graphic violence and adult nudity via its service over the January-to-March quarter than the prior three months.

But it said it had yet to develop a way to judge if this was also true of hate speech and terrorist propaganda.

"As we learn about the right way to do this, we will improve the methodology," commented Facebook's head of product management, Guy Rosen.

Late last month, a rumor suggested the arrival of a new LG Wear OS device that would feature a hybrid analog design.

ZNFW315 (via Droid-Life) runs Wear OS as confirmed by screenshots of the on-device FCC ID E-Label. The LM-W315 model number matches the Watch Style (W270) and Watch Sport (W280), while the images confirm a circular display.

The first screenshot shows an interesting design for the app list that is notably different form the current vertical list. Instead, app icons are arranged in a half circle with a cutout up top that notes the name of the app currently at the 6 o’clock position

The change is possibly due to a hybrid factor rumored by Android Headlines. In addition to a 1.2-inch LCD screen, the device reportedly features analog hands with a traditional quartz movement. This allows for a longer battery life and meant at appealing to different demographics.

Supposed specs are otherwise standard for Wear OS with a Snapdragon 2100, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. As confirmed by today’s FCC filing, this model does not have cellular capabilities and will just use Bluetooth and WiFi.

At the very least, we’ll likely see an announcement at I/O 2018 by Google of the new hybrid form factor for Wear OS, but it’s also possible an on-stage launch is coming.

According to the Washington Post, Google is planning to enter the industry’s broader discussion on the role of technology in people’s lives at I/O 2018. Apple faced criticism in March over technology addiction in regards to parental controls, while Facebook is constantly in the news about its role as a vast social network.

Noting that Google has managed to avoid the controversy, the WP reports that Android is adding new controls to help both families and individuals manage the time they spend on mobile devices. For the former, Google already has Family Link which allows parents to limit screen time down to the app-level, as well as pause Wi-Fi overnight and lock devices.

However, it appears that Google’s new controls will be aimed at everyone and not just kids.

Technology addiction and its impact on day-to-day lives is one common critique, as summarized by the Time Well Spent movement, while Silicon Valley is grappling with its outsized role as the overseer of platforms with billions of users. These issues will only increase in the coming years as new advancements led by AI will disrupt industries, with many jobs possibly no longer existing.

Build is Microsoft's developer conference. This year's conference - Build 2018 - is from 7 May to 9 May, which is the same week Google plans to hold its own developer conference. *Windows 10: Your Phone app:* Microsoft unveiled a new “Your Phone” app for Windows 10. It provides a mirror of a phone straight to a desktop PC, so that you can access texts, photos, and notifications from your workstation.

*Windows Mixed Reality*: Microsoft Layout. Microsoft announced a new “mixed reality” tool called Microsoft Layout. It lets you design and visualise real spaces in either Microsoft HoloLens or a virtual reality headset. Layout allows Windows Mixed Reality you to construct a virtual floor plan and move 3D models on it using a VR headset, so you can preview how a room would look. Then, you can go to the physical location and view that layout using HoloLens.



*DJI partnership*: DJI partnered with Microsoft to create a new drone SDK for Windows 10. This will enable full flight control and data transfer to Windows 10 PCs. So, with apps written for Windows 10 PCs, DJI drones will be able to be customised and controlled for a wide variety of industrial uses. This will also make it easy to integrate third-party hardware, such as multispectral sensors or custom actuators, with DJI’s drones.

*Alexa and Cortana*: We've been given a demo of Cortana running on Alexa and vice versa. It works by simply summoning Cortana with the command “Alexa, open Cortana.” You can then ask questions or commands (like “send an email”) to a specific person - something you can't do with just Alexa alone. Similarly, you can cue up Alexa within the Cortana interface on Windows 10 in order to access Alexa skills.

*Kinect in the cloud*: Microsoft is moving Kinect to the cloud, according to CEO Satya Nadella: “Kinect, when we first launched it in 2010, was a speech-first, gaze-first, vision-first device. It was used in gaming, and then, later on, it came to the PC, and it was used in many applications: medical, industrial, robotics, education... We’ve been inspired by what developers have done, and since Kinect, we’ve made a tremendous amount of progress when it comes to some of the foundational technologies in HoloLens. So we’re taking those advances and packaging them up as Project Kinect for Azure.”

*Meeting room*: Microsoft demoed "meeting room" - prototype hardware that should make meetings and conferences more manageable. Microsoft’s meeting room features a 360-degree camera and microphone array that can detect anyone in a meeting room, greet them, and transcribe what they say in any language. It also uses artificial intelligence to follow up on what meeting participants say in a meeting.

Chinese manufacturer OnePlus is set to unveil its latest flagship smartphone Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Before its official launch, the OnePlus 6 will first be available exclusively at selected pop-up stores worldwide from Monday, May 21.

Various online rumours suggest that the OnePlus 6 will be a powerful handset, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and 8GB RAM for the highest-spec model. The handset's 6.3in OLED screen (1080p) reportedly has a “notch”, as made famous by the iPhone X, and could have a dual camera. It's expected to sell for around €500 (RM2,352), and in 128GB and 256GB versions.

The phone will be sold on a first come, first serve basis, although OnePlus has not yet said how many smartphones will be available at each pop-up store. In recent years, OnePlus has become something of a specialist in selling high-end smartphones at rock-bottom prices.

In a significant development, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has developed an atomic clock that will be used in navigation satellites to measure precise location data. The space agency currently imports atomic clocks from European aerospace manufacturer Astrium for its navigation satellites.

Tapan Misra, director of Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC), said, “SAC has developed an indigenous atomic clock and this clock is currently undergoing a series of qualification tests. Once it successfully clears all tests, the desi atomic clock will be used in an experimental navigation satellite to test its accuracy and durability in space.”

The SAC director said, “With the development of the desi atomic clock, Isro has become one of the few space organisations in the world which have gained the capability to develop this highly sophisticated technology. We don't know the design and technology of the imported atomic clock. But the desi clock has been developed based on our designs and specifications. This clock is as good as the imported one. We are hopeful that it will easily work for more than five years.”

Recently, Boeing created
a website called "Watch US Fly" to promote its aerospace industry—a grab bag of everything from Chinese tariffs to President Trump's visit to the company's facilities in St. Louis. Among the most intriguing sections is one that promotes the company's Space Launch System rocket and argues that SpaceX's Falcon Heavy booster is "too small" for NASA's deep exploration program.

"The Falcon Heavy launch turned heads in February, but SpaceX's rocket is a smaller type of rocket that can't meet NASA's deep-space needs," the website states. "Once the Boeing-built SLS is operational, it will be the most powerful rocket ever built."

The Boeing site backs up this claim by quoting NASA's Bill Gerstenmaier, who talked about the differences between the SLS rocket and Falcon Heavy at a meeting of the NASA Advisory Council meeting in March. Gerstenmaier, the chief of NASA's human spaceflight program, said the SLS had "unique capabilities" that the Falcon Heavy rocket does not have. However, as Ars reported at the time, Gerstenmaier actually struggled to explain why NASA needed the SLS rocket because the space agency has not yet built anything that will take advantage of those capabilities.

Researchers said Chinese intelligence officers are behind almost a decade's worth of network intrusions that use advanced malware to penetrate software and gaming companies in the US, Europe, Russia, and elsewhere. The hackers have struck as recently as March in a campaign that used phishing emails in an attempt to access corporate-sensitive Office 365 and Gmail accounts. In the process, they made serious operational security errors that revealed key information about their targets and possible location.

Researchers from various security organizations have used a variety of names to assign responsibility for the hacks, including LEAD, BARIUM, Wicked Panda, GREF, PassCV, Axiom, and Winnti. In many cases, the researchers assumed the groups were distinct and unaffiliated. According to a 49-page report published Thursday, all of the attacks are the work of Chinese government's intelligence apparatus, which the report's authors dub the Winnti Umbrella. Researchers from 401TRG, the threat research and analysis team at security company ProtectWise, based the attribution on common network infrastructure, tactics, techniques, and procedures used in the attacks as well as operational security mistakes that revealed the possible location of individual members.

Attacks associated with Winnti Umbrella have been active since at least 2009 and possibly date back to 2007. In 2013, antivirus company Kaspersky Lab reported that hackers using computers with Chinese and Korean language configurations used a backdoor dubbed Winnti to infect more than 30 online video game companies over the previous four years. The attackers used their unauthorized access to obtain digital certificates that were later exploited to sign malware used in campaigns targeting other industries and political activists.

Also in 2013, security firm Symantec reported on a hacking group dubbed Hidden Linx that was behind attacks on more than 100 organizations, including the high-profile 2012 intrusion that stole the crypto key from Bit9 and used it to infect at least three of the security company's customers.

Cambridge Analytica, the embattled London-based data analytics firm that famously did work for the Donald Trump presidential campaign, has shut down.

It was revealed last month that a 2014 survey app that required Facebook login credentials allowed the survey creator and his team access to their friends' public profile data.

The Cambridge Analytica dustup has resulted in Facebook now being on the defensive; the social media company has trotted out one change after another and CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself recently testified over the course of 10 hours to a joint Senate committee hearing.

According to the Journal: "Nigel Oakes, the founder of SCL Group, Cambridge Analytica's British affiliate, confirmed that both companies were closing down."

"Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the Company's efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas," the company said.

On Tuesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is working on a tool that would allow users a "simple way to clear your cookies and history."

While the company didn't say so explicitly, this move seems to be in response to the Cambridge Analytica fiasco.

Last month, it was revealed that a 2014 survey app that required Facebook login credentials allowed the survey creator and his team access to their friends' public profile data. In the end, this system captured data on 87 million Facebook users. This data trove wound up in the hands of Cambridge Analytica, a British data analytics firm, which worked for the Donald Trump presidential campaign.

"We're starting with something a lot of people have asked about recently: the information we see from websites and apps that use Facebook's ads and analytics tools," Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page.

"Once we roll out this update, you'll be able to see information about the apps and websites you've interacted with, and you'll be able to clear this information from your account. You'll even be able to turn off having this information stored with your account."

Amid its ongoing battle with Snapchat, Instagram is now looking to become a larger player in the commerce industry. According to a report from TechCrunch, Instagram has started rolling out a feature that would allow users to make purchases directly in the Instagram application…

The feature prompts users to register a debit or credit card to their profile, add a security pin, and begin making purchases within the Instagram application. Instagram has confirmed the feature’s existence, saying it is currently live with a handful of early partners.

Dinner reservation application Resy is one of those early partners. With this feature, users can make reservations through Resy partner profile pages and pay for that reservation directly within the Instagram application. TechCrunch notes that the payment settings interface is live for some users in the United States and U.K., but not for everyone just yet. The feature is backed by Facebook’s Payments rules.

Smartphone market leader Samsung saw its market share fall 2.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, reports IDC, despite launching its flagship S9 and S9+ handsets earlier than usual.

IDC does, however, note that the bulk of S9/S9+ sales will fall into Q2 ...

DC reports that the market as a whole experienced a fall in sales of 2.9% during the same period.

According to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone vendors shipped a total of 334.3 million units during the first quarter of 2018 (1Q18), resulting in a 2.9% decline when compared to the 344.4 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2017.

It now looks as if consumers are not willing to shell out this kind of money for a new device that brings minimal upgrades over their current device.

The success of Apple's high-priced iPhone X did, however, see the company achieve significantly greater growth in both revenue and profit thanks to a dramatic uplift in average selling price.

Twitter is urging all of its more than 330 million users to immediately change their passwords after a bug exposed them in plain text. While Twitter’s investigation showed that there was no evidence that any breach or misuse of the unmasked passwords occurred, the company is recommending that users change their Twitter passwords out of an “abundance of caution,” both on the site itself and anywhere else they may have used that password, which includes third-party apps like Twitterrific and TweetDeck.

According to Twitter, the bug occurred due to an issue in the hashing process that masks passwords by replacing them with a random string of characters that get stored on Twitter’s system. But due to an error with the system, apparently passwords were being saved in plain text to an internal log, instead of masking them with the hashing process. Twitter claims to have found the bug on its own and removed the passwords. It’s working to make sure that similar issues don’t come up again.

Twitter hasn’t revealed how many users’ passwords may have potentially been compromised or how long the bug was exposing passwords before it found and fixed the issue. But the fact that the company is urging its entire user base to change their passwords indicates that it would seem to be a significant number of users.

Microsoft Corporation has opened Africa’s first Software Testing Centre in Nairobi, putting Kenya in the global picture as home to technological innovation. Kenya becomes the fourth country in the world after China, Poland and India to host such a centre, which will employ more than 1,000 youth. DP Ruto praised the move. HTC has been eerily quiet when it comes to smartphones for the past several months, but we've known for quite a while that the company has a new flagship in the works.

In a brief teaser released on Twitter this morning as well as sent to members of the press, HTC has officially started promoting its next Android smartphone.

While that could mean anything, it probably means HTC is trying to go more of a Pixel route with this device, focusing more on selling the device based on what it can do, and less so on what powers it.

Previous spec leaks show off what should be a very capable phone, and if last year's HTC U11 is any indication, we should be getting a killer camera here.

It's also worth noting that this is probably going to be one of the very few flagship devices launching in 2018 without a notch on the display as well.

Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2018 second quarter ended March 31, 2018. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $61.1 billion, an increase of 16 percent from the year-ago quarter, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $2.73, up 30 percent. International sales accounted for 65 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

“We’re thrilled to report our best March quarter ever, with strong revenue growth in iPhone, Services and Wearables,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Customers chose iPhone X more than any other iPhone each week in the March quarter, just as they did following its launch in the December quarter. We also grew revenue in all of our geographic segments, with over 20% growth in Greater China and Japan.”

“Our business performed extremely well during the March quarter, as we grew earnings per share by 30 percent and generated over $15 billion in operating cash flow,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “With the greater flexibility we now have from access to our global cash, we can more efficiently invest in our US operations and work toward a more optimal capital structure. Given our confidence in Apple’s future, we are very happy to announce that our Board has approved a new $100 billion share repurchase authorization and a 16 percent increase in our quarterly dividend.”

Google Assistant continues to add new first-party capabilities and update existing functionality, like remembering podcast playback across devices.

The Google Assistant Services list now features a new menu called "Stocks."

It is rolling out as of this morning to several, but not all of the devices.

Appearing in Assistant settings, it shows up at the bottom of the list and just serves as a simple shortcut to the existing settings in the Google app to manage stocks.

A list of stocks have long been displayed in the Upcoming tab of the Google Feed and occasionally send notifications during price drops or increases. Tapping the overflow menu on that card lets users “Customize stocks.”

This new way to access through Google Assistant is slightly more convenient for those who frequently use the feature and comes as more and more controls are centralized in this Services list for Assistant.

MPs have threatened to issue Mark Zuckerberg with a formal summons to appear in front of parliament when he next enters the UK, unless he voluntarily agrees to answer questions about the activities of his social network and the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Damian Collins, the chair of the parliamentary committee that is investigating online disinformation, said he was unhappy with the information the company had provided and wanted to hear evidence from the Facebook chief executive before parliament went into recess on 24 May.

“It is worth noting that, while Mr Zuckerberg does not normally come under the jurisdiction of the UK parliament, he will do so the next time he enters the country,” Collins wrote in a public letter to Facebook. “We hope that he will respond positively to our request, but, if not, the committee will resolve to issue a formal summons for him to appear when he is next in the UK.”

Collins referred to an unconfirmed report by Politico that Zuckerberg planned to appear in front of the European Parliament this month, suggesting it would be simple for the Facebook chief to extend his trip to attend a hearing in the UK. He has asked for a response by 11 May.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg started off the F8 2018 conference with a protracted apology for Facebook’s role in Russian election-meddling and third-party acquisitions of personal data, explaining Facebook's new privacy security settings along the way. Here are the seven most important announcements from the F8 2018 Day 1 keynote:

*1. Oculus Go release date is today: *In a not-so-surprise announcement, Zuckerberg informed the San Jose, California conference crowd and those watching via livestream that Oculus Go is on sale today on Oculus.com. People in 23 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, can go on the site and purchase the standalone headset right now.

*2. Dating profiles are coming to Facebook:* Soon, you'l' be able to build a Facebook dating profile and connect with other singles in your area—in a part of the app that your regular Facebook friends can’t see. If you opt into the feature, you’ll be able to set up a dating profile, then search your area for Events and Groups where you're likely to meet potential daters.

*3. Facebook Messenger is getting a redesign: *Facebook Messenger may be getting new features like *4K photos, AR effects and AI translation* tech, but the platform's upcoming interface revamp will clear away a lot of the clutter. VP of Messaging David Marcus showed off a quick glance at the new look on stage some time after Zuckerberg also said Messenger was due to get a simpler, cleaner look.

*4. Clear History will wipe what you've been browsing:* In a few months, Facebook will roll out a “Clear History” option, which will let you turn off Facebook’s ability to store data on you. Normally, Facebook Analytics collects data on your browsing history and “Likes”, and uses this information to curate suggestions and ads for your feed. With Clear History, you’ll be able to wipe all of Facebook Analytics’ collected information about you.

*5. New social-focused VR apps: *Oculus is pulling out all of the stops to ensure that Oculus Go owners have plenty of new, exclusive VR content to try out within their first month of purchase. Facebook, which owns Oculus, outlined the new and significantly updated apps coming to the platform. The first app, Oculus Rooms, has been around for awhile, but now it's redesigned and all about making it easier than ever to hang out with friends in a virtual space to play games, watch movies, or otherwise catch up. It'll be available for Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR for now.

*6. Instagram and Messenger add AR Camera Effects:* At last year’s F8, Facebook showed off its new augmented reality (AR) technology, which lets you insert 3D animated creations into your photos and videos. Now, the company has brought its AR Camera Effects suite directly into Instagram and Facebook Messenger, so you can add things like face filters, “world effects” or 3D objects into your feed.

*7. Big updates to Instagram chat and WhatsApp calling: *Confirming rumours from earlier this year, Zuckerberg announced that Instagram users can now use video chat to connect with people through the app. *Up to four people can join the chat at once*, and you’ll be able to browse around inside the app while your friends sit in a thumbnail in the corner. Facebook has also added a similar option to *WhatsApp called Group Calling*, which also allows up to four people onto one call.

Rumors have been floating around the past few weeks that Samsung was planning to launch new Galaxy S9/S9+ variants with higher storage, and today the company has made that official in a blog post.

Samsung points out in the post that these new tiers are being made available for users who "who want to instantly access their high-capacity files while on the go."

With all of the 4K footage, slo-mo video, and fantastic pictures the S9 family can take, it makes sense to offer the extra built-in storage, even though microSD expansion is available.

It's also worth noting that Samsung is offering free Gear Icon X (2018) earbuds or a Gear S3 Frontier discounted to just $99 between May 1st and May 17th for any S9 purchase, including these pre-orders.

Facebook came under massive fire for first allowing Cambridge Analytica to hoover up user data from the platform, and second keeping quiet when it found out about it. But it turns out that Twitter has directly sold data to the company …

The news was revealed by the Telegraph over the weekend, and was confirmed by Twitter, which says that it has now banned ads by the company.

A Twitter spokesman confirmed the ban and said: “Twitter has also made the policy decision to off-board advertising from all accounts owned and operated by Cambridge Analytica. This decision is based on our determination that Cambridge Analytica operates using a business model that inherently conflicts with acceptable Twitter Ads business practices.

One difference, however, is that Facebook allowed the company to collect data users would have expected to be available only to their Facebook friends; Twitter data is almost all publicly available. There is, though, a big gulf between reading individual tweets and mass-collection of same for analysis.

The debut of the LG G7 ThinQ will happen this week, and ahead of the event, LG isn't being shy about teasing some of the phone's best new features.

LG revealed (via Engadget) a few new details about the speaker on the LG G7 ThinQ today, which tease a very powerful new speaker.

Along with a louder overall speaker, LG also says that this "Boombox" setup will produce twice as much bass as your typical smartphone speaker, further being able to amplify the effect when you place the device down on a solid surface.

Those are lofty claims, and LG says it achieved this result by using a special "resonance chamber design" within the phone.

LG also says that the Hi-Fi Quad DAC seen in past LG smartphones such as the V30 will return on the G7, which is great not just for high-end listeners, but also the average Joe since it confirms a headphone jack.

Stanford alumnus Brian Acton and Ukrainian immigrant Mr Koum co-founded WhatsApp in 2009, before selling it to Facebook in 2014 for $19bn (£13.8bn).

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg commented on Mr Koum's post, saying he was grateful for what Koum taught him about encryption "and its ability to take power from centralized systems and put it back in people's hands."
